How Much Does Facebook Really Matter?

Google and Bing both openly stated that they look at how links are shared and distributed across Facebook and Twitter. Meaning that they actually changed their algorithm to see how much you and the rest of the world share things on these social media sites. Why you ask? Because, if the search engines are able to mimic this human behavior of sharing, than they’re going to be able to give all of us more relevant end results. That’s right, they watch you and what you like and give websites credit for the things you “like” and tweet. That should be enough to make you believe that social media truly is important to your business. Don’t get me wrong, you need strategy behind it before you dive in, but it’s definitely time to get started if you haven’t.

All right, I’m done with the motherly SEO speech. Let’s look at the facts.

Users. Out of 500 million active users on Facebook, 250 million of them log on, on a daily basis. Let’s look at this compared to population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of the U.S. is 311,927,569 and the population of the entire world is 6,894,851,305.

There are officially more people on Facebook than the entire population of America and 7% of the entire world is on Facebook. When you consider that Internet World Stats claims that there are currently 1,966,514,816 active Internet Users around the world (based on its most recent data), our percentage jumps to 25% of those users being active on Facebook! Let’s make this pretty…

And, if Facebook were a country it’d beat out the U.S. as the 3rd largest country in the world…

To top it off, 70% of those 500 million users are outside the U.S. It looks like it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start going global with your social media strategy.

Content. Remember how I said that Google and Bing like to see how much you share things on these monster social media networks? Well, there’s no wonder they jumped on this. We share our lives on Facebook, on average, 90 times per month. That’s 90 pieces of fresh content coming from all those users; wow, how’s that for fresh content? We also like to share things we find, to the tune of 30 billion times per month. Things like news articles, pictures, blog posts, recipes and more.

Share and share a like my friend. If it’s interesting it’s getting liked and shared, and the search engines are taking notice.

If you’ve made it this far, then you’re asking yourself what this all means. What you should be thinking about is getting active. I don’t just mean create a page and pay attention to it for a month; I mean adding valuable and meaningful content that people are interested in. Continuing the conversation and have a social media plan in place to help you find your focus.

There are people out there waiting to here from you. Now it’s your turn to find out how to embrace them.
